The need for support services and training for individuals with developmental disabilities in Gunnison was first identified by a group of concerned parents and citizens in 1972.

Following many meetings with local and state officials, the Six Points Association was formed in 1975 to address the needs for vocational rehabilitation and to provide work opportunities for the disabled.

Over the years many community-based initiatives for providing training and employment were established.  Included among these efforts were a truss mill, a greenhouse, and an artisans gallery.  In some cases contracts were developed to provide services to the community, such as concessions sales for the city of Gunnison’s recreation programs, an ice cream cart, the assembly and packaging of items for marketing, and services to support a seniors program.  In 1985, the association was formally incorporated as Six Points Evaluation and Training, Inc. and a thrift store was opened to support the vocational program.

Throughout the development of these programs, there remained an inherent desire to maintain employment services for the developmentally disabled individuals that would allow them the opportunity to express their unique talents, desires, interests and abilities in community based, integrated settings.  While many individuals served by the agency have secured work within other businesses, those who require greater levels of assistance have maintained their employment through the thrift store and other industries directly supported by Six Points.
